Accordionist Sabin Jacques and pianist Rachel Aucoin have been musical and life partners since 1997. Sabin has been dedicated to preserving the rich Quebec tradition of the diatonic folk accordion, especially the music of revered accordionist and composer Phillipe Bruneau. Rachel has a background in classical piano and an abundant Acadian family tradition. Together they weave strands of the old and new into a rich, robust, and colourful musical fabric. Be ready to be transported to somewhere between a night of dancing and a grand classical concert.
Toronto fiddler Karrnnel is back to play his yearly December show. He’s joined by his two sisters, Kimberly and Kanndece, as they pay tribute to their father Orest and the music they played together as The Sawitsky Family Fiddlers. From old-time dance favourites to Karrnnel’s contemporary fiddle style, this show will also feature many more special guests.
Here is a chance for the whole family to get off the sofa and away from the dining table after Christmas and get out on the dance floor. If you have never square danced, this is the time to come and learn. Square dance caller Jille Shotton will walk you through all the moves and you will be doin’ the do-si-do before you know it! There will be other old time dances too – the waltz, the butterfly and the schottische. With fiddler J.J. Guy providing the live music, this is a great way to hear some great tunes and get some exercise at the same time!
With the passing of Everett Larson in July, our fiddle and accordion community lost a pioneer. Everett taught generations of fiddlers and accordionists in Saskatoon and his influence will reverberate for a long, long time. Come join the Saskatoon music community as we pay tribute to this generous and gentle mentor. The concert will feature many of Everett’s students, including James Steele on fiddle, and Ken Pizurny and Ray Penner on accordion. Members of the Saskatoon Fiddle Orchestra will perform several tunes, as will John Arcand and other musical guests.
While dedicated to the musical roots of the fiddle repertoire, the Canadian Fiddle Revue also embraces the new fiddle music destined to become part of the tradition. The Revue showcases the talents of perennial favourites J.J. Guy, Daniel Koulack, Troy MacGillivray, and Gordon Stobbe. This year’s featured performers are five-time Grand North American Fiddle Champion Ivonne Hernandez, three-time Canadian Grand Masters Fiddle Champion Mark Sullivan, and Quebec button accordion virtuoso Sabin Jacques.
