We are pleased to present the following instructors for 2019! Stay tuned as we add to our roster!
Gordon Stobbe - Seaforth, Nova Scotia - Fiddle Meet the newest member of the Order of Canada! We are so very excited to have Gord join the teaching staff again this year! He is likely the most highly sought after instructor and performer on the fiddle circuit these days. Never one to let the dust settle, Gordon keeps busy with a host of projects across Canada. His "Fiddle History of Canada" production is being workshopped and presented in several provinces, he continues to compose and tour, and will be releasing a new CD soon with some of the tunes he has composed with fellow musician and travel buddy JJ Guy. There is no room here to list all the accomplishments of this Canadian treasure, so check his website. But above all, Gordon is an inspiration to anyone who sees him perform, or teach, or call a square dance! http://www.fiddlebooks.com
J.J. Guy - Lintlaw, Saskatchewan - Fiddle A staple at the FiddlyNess fiddle camp and returning for his fifth consecutive year, it was no accident that J.J. Guy took home the "People's Choice Award" at the 2013 Canadian Grand Masters Fiddling Championship in Saskatoon in August 2013! J.J. is a beloved performer and instructor who has touched the hearts of thousands of fiddlers at fiddle camps across Canada. From B.C. to the NWT to the east coast, JJ is kept hopping, teaching and performing along the way. He has several recordings under his belt, and we are lucky to snag him for FiddlyNess this year as part of his busy touring schedule. www.jjguy.ca
Daniel Koulack - Winnipeg, Manitoba - Clawhammer Banjo Returning to FiddlyNess for his fifth year, Daniel brings a wealth of talent and experience to the FiddlyNess roster. We are very pleased to have him join our faculty, and know that he will offer a claw hammer class that will take his students to the next level in their playing, regardless of what level they are at. He is a highly sought after instructor, and a world class musician, who has many recordings to his name in a number of genres, including klezmer music, world music, and traditional old time music. Not only known as a great impresario, Daniel also wowed the music world with his recent vinyl release, Frailing to Succeed, released in 2016. Daniel's own music can also be heard on Clawhammer Your Way to the Top and Life on a String, both of which were nominated for Juno awards in the Best Roots/Traditional category. Daniel has also collaborated in the studio with Karrnnel Sawitsky, and their "Fiddle and Banjo" recordings have been warmly received and have garnered critical acclaim. http://danielkoulack.com
Rachel Aucoin - Quebec City, Quebec - Piano After classical training including two Masters degrees (performance, UofM 2001 and piano pedagogy, UL, 2003), Rachel Aucoin specialises today in folk music accompaniment, since her first appearance at the Carrefour Mondial de l’Accordéon in 1999. She never imagined this apparently innocent performance would change her musical destiny. A window on the world had just opened and showed her the way to her heart’s music where she would meet with her Acadian ancestors’ spirits, bringing out a family tradition rich with singing, dancing and fiddling, kitchen style. She even discovered recently her great-grandfather was certainly one of the first accordion players on Cape Breton Island! Off-stage from being a passionate dance musician, Rachel has recorded with many artists such as Laura Risk, Natalie MacMaster and Donnell Leahy, as well as many Quebec based trad musicians (Claude Méthé, Francine Desjardins, Réjean Simard, Jean Duval, etc.). You can hear her percussive, rich and sensible improvised accompaniment on both Raz-de-maree’s recordings, along with fellow musicians Stuart Kenney, Sabin Jacques, Eric Favreau, Claudine Arcand and André Brunet. Beyond her performance career, Rachel gives most of her spare time to the non-profit organization Mareemusique, through which she created the Camp de Souches à Oreilles, amongst many other local and regional events.
